EBR South Photo Gallery | Cox's special screening of "The Loving Story"

Cox Communications and its Employee Diversity Council hosted a special screening recently of HBO's "The Loving Story." The screening took place at the Manship Theatre downtown. It was attended by Cox employees, supporters, HBO officials. and the community at large.  The event featured a reception and panel discussion.

The documentary tells the incredible love story of Richard and Mildred White, an interracial couple from rural Virginia. They were married in Washington D.C. where interracial marriage was legal, but when they returned home to Virginia they learned it was illegal. They were told they either had to get a divorce or leave their hometown. Virginia was one of 20 states that banned interracial marriages.

The Whites did neither. They took their case to the U.S. Supreme Court to get their marriage legalized and won. Interracial marriage became legal in the U.S. in 1967.
