First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.

The Office of the Mayor-President has signed on as a major sponsor of the double-elimination tournament.

The Jaguars are currently riding a 16-game win streak and will face LSU-Eunice in a 3-game series May 10-12 at Lee-Hines Field in the regular season finale.

Southern's Athletic Director welcomes the challenge

William Broussard has been on the job now for a little more than a month.

"You asked me how it was going today and I said this will be the first time I sat down today," Broussard says.

Even when he's sitting down, the new Southern University Athletic Director is working nonstop--making phone calls or meeting with staff.

"I accepted this job because I wanted a challenge and also because of the great potential I see here," he says.

He has plenty of challenges. But the 33-year-old former football player with a doctorate in english is a man with a plan.

His first priority tackling his team's poor academic performance.

"So we're adding tutors-- student tutors and graduate assistants and looking to add a fulltime staff member for academics as well," he says.

Another issue... addressing the football team's disappointing season.

"The first thing I'm going to do is support Coach Mitchell and his team in whatever way I need to be able to do that," Broussard says.

Southern's female strength and conditioning coach making history

Southern's female strength and conditioning coach making history

When she tells people what she does for a living, Corliss Fingers says she’s constantly reminded of her gender.

“I’ll introduce myself or they’ll say ‘I heard about you’ and then look at me and say ‘but you’re a female,’” she recalls.

Fingers laughs it off. As the head strength and conditioning coach at Southern University and the only female to hold the position in the NCAA Division 1 football program (which includes the Southwestern Athletic Conference), she’s used to it.

“To me honestly, it really isn’t a big deal,” she says. “I’m a strength and conditioning coach with 18 years of experience.  It’s an accomplishment, but it’s not overwhelming. I"ve been doing it for so long.”

It’s very rare though. She can recall only two other females ever holding the position.

Before joining Southern in February, Fingers worked at the University of North Carolina and the University of Maryland.
