Proposal for elected BR Police Chief deleted

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB)- Voters in Baton Rouge will not be deciding on whether the city's police chief should be an elected position, at least for now.

If approved, a proposal before the East Baton Rouge Metro Council Wednesday would have put the measure before voters.

However, after a brief discussion on the issue, the council voted to remove the item from the agenda.  Councilwoman C. Denise Marcelle supported the move to delete the item after it was clear she did not have the support needed for it to pass.  Marcelle said she would move to have the proposal reconsidered in the near future.

Currently, the Mayor-President has sole authority to hire or fire the city's police chief.

Unclaimed $10,000 lottery ticket set to expire

Unclaimed $10,000 lottery ticket set to expire

BATON ROUGE – No one has stepped forward to claim a $10,000 Louisiana Lottery Powerball prize won on Oct. 6, 2012. The winning ticket was purchased at Kajan Mart #2 on Veterans Drive in Carencro and is set to expire April 4.

The winning ticket matched four of the five whiteball numbers drawn and the red Powerball number. The winning numbers for the Oct. 6 drawing were 15 - 26 - 34 - 36 - 59 and the Powerball number was 35.

The holder of the winning ticket has until 5 p.m. on the date of expiration to claim the prize, subject to the Lottery’s hours of operation. Winnings are subject to applicable federal and state tax withholdings.  Prizes greater than $600 may be claimed at any of the Lottery’s five regional offices located throughout the state or Lottery headquarters in Baton Rouge.

“We look forward to the winner coming forward to claim this prize.  In the meantime, the individual should treat the ticket as cash,” said Lottery President Rose Hudson.  “It is also a good idea to sign the back of the ticket for security purposes.”

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB)- CLARIFICATION:   The judge in this case has given DPW the authority to tear down this home if DPW deems it necessary.  We apologize that our original report did not reflect that.

A judge has given the East Baton Rouge Parish Public Works Department the authority to tear down a home if the workers deem it necessary.

Neighbors near the home, located at 428 Stoney Creek Avenue, have been complaining about the home being in disrepair for nearly six years.   The home was heavily damaged in Hurricane Gustav and little, if any, repairs were made.

EBR Council delays vote on police chief measure

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB)- Should the position of Baton Rouge Police Chief be appointed or elected? It has been a topic of discussion since former Baton Rouge Police Chief Dewayne White was fired. It was an item of discussion for Wednesday's East Baton Rouge Metro-Council meeting, but the action was delayed.

Councilwoman Denise Marcelle is trying to change the process so the people can elect the Police Chief. That would mean the position has a term limit and no one could fire the person, they would have to serve out their term.

The issue was to be considered at the council's meeting Wednesday but Marcelle asked that the matter be moved to the March 13th council meeting due to a low voter turnout.  Marcelle says an error in a newspaper report about the date when the matter would be discussed possibly led to the low public turnout.

If the council decides to put an issue to a vote of the people, Marcelle says the matter would likely be on the ballot in October.

Currently, the position for top cop is appointed by Mayor Kip Holden. Even though the Mayor says otherwise, the Civil Service Board says the position is classified.
