Troopers encourage safety on the road

Troopers encourage safety on the road

It’s the holiday visitor you don’t want to hear from—a trooper at your front door making a death notification for a family member.  Unfortunately, dozens of families in Louisiana may receive just such a visit this holiday season, and troopers are asking drivers to be mindful of the risks of holiday travel.  The fewer homes visited the better.

Historically, the Christmas and New Year’s holiday season is one of the deadliest and most dangerous times on Louisiana roads due in part to increases in traffic volume as well as an increase in impaired driving.  Last year in the month of December, there were 67 fatal crashes statewide.  Of those, almost half involved a driver impaired by drugs and/or alcohol.

Troopers encourage drivers to plan ahead if they intend on consuming alcohol, by using designated drivers or making other travel arrangements.  For those who make poor decisions by driving after drinking, the likelihood of apprehension and arrest will be increased.

Troopers and local law enforcement partners will be extremely vigilant and aggressive in pursuit of dangerous drivers.

DOTD employees spread Christmas cheer

Employees at the Department of Transportation and Development are helping to spread some Christmas joy. The employees about 25 of them adopted a family of four from South Baton Rouge giving toys and clothes.  The group from the Financial Services section presented the gifts to the mother and her three children at the office on Tuesday, Dec. 20.

The family includes mom Barbara Godchaux,  12-year-old daughter Christian, and two sons, 16-year old Michael and two-year-old Aaron.

"The mom actually started crying and then we started tearing up with her," said Trechal Bowman.  "We told her it was our pleasure to do this for the family."

The family was recommended by St. Vincent de Paul. Deborah Jordan helped coordinate the donations.

Rock-n-Roll up your sleeve

Rock-n-Roll up your sleeve

It's time to rock and roll up your sleeves to help patients in need! Join this life saving event as Guaranty Broadcasting and United Blood Services start a holiday tradition by hosting the Rock 'N' Roll Up Your Sleeve Blood Drive, Bone Marrow, and Food Bank Drive. The event kicks off Tuesday December 20 from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and will be held at United Blood Services, 8234 One Calais, in Baton Rouge. Everyone who comes to donate blood will receive a special T-shirt and will be entered to will hourly prizes! PLUS after the event one lucky Holiday Hero will win a $300 AMC gift card!

Blood donations during the holiday season are very important because many regular donors cancel appointments to accommodate vacation plans. At the same time, auto accidents, bad weather, and the onset of the cold and flu season take a toll on the community blood supply.
