U.S. Transportation Secretary Nominee has Baton Rouge ties | Events
President Obama’s nominee for Secretary of Transportation, Anthony Foxx, has a local connection.
His mother-in-law and father-in-law -- Bill and Exyie Ryder --live in Baton Rouge. His wife, Samara, is from Baton Rouge and graduated from U High. Foxx and his wife were married in Baton Rouge in 2001 and they have two children.
“I know he will do an excellent job,” his proud mother-in-law tells 9News Neighborhoods. “This is a big moment for our family. It’s one of those things you never dream of happening.”
“We’re very excited and happy,” said Mr. Ryder. “We watched the news conference announcing his nomination several times.”
Foxx, 42, was nominated Monday, April 29. He has served as Mayor of Charlotte, North Carolina since 2009.
The Ryders, both retired Southern University professors, say they have been getting calls and texts from friends and family across the country ever since the nomination was announced.
“We’re very proud of him,” Mrs. Ryder says. “He’s a wonderful son-in-law, a great husband, and father.”
They say they’re surprised by the nomination, but not shocked.
“He’s ascended so fast from Charlotte council member to mayor and now this,” Mr. Ryder says. “But he’s a people person. When we’re with him in Charlotte, he’s stopped all the time and he’s never too busy to listen to people’s concerns.”
The couple say they’re trying not to get too excited because Foxx is not confirmed yet but, but they’re looking forward to going to Washington for his swearing-in ceremony.
