BR man murdered in Hawaii

KAHULUI, Hi -- Police in Hawaii want to know who brutally beat a Baton Roge man and left his body on a Maui beach.

Police say 57-year-old William Sublett's body was found Christmas day, near a wastewater treatment plant in Kahului..

An autopsy reveals Sublett had been beaten to death. A preliminary investigation shows he suffered multiple trauma to the head and that there were no signs of metal fragments.

Police say Sublett was working on Maui but it was not clear how long he was living on the island.

Apple phishing scam

There are reports of a widespread phishing scam requesting AppleID information, suggesting the recipient’s AppleID will expire unless the user clicks on a link in the email, and updates billing information. There doesn’t appear to be anything particularly sophisticated about this scam, except that the email manages to avoid grammatical errors and has a somewhat legit-seeming “Apple look” to it. Also,  the web page the spurious link takes you to reportedly looks quite legitimate. (Web page not shown here.)

IT professionals suggest you do not click on the link. If you get it, just delete it.

Credit card hackers play Robin Hood with your money

AUSTIN, TX (KVUE/CNN) – The personal information of thousands of credit card users has been compromised after a hacking group called Anonymous struck global security firm Stratfor.

"It's very disrupting, very disturbing," said fraud victim, Allen Barr.

Barr is a Stratfor subscriber and retired state employee who lost $700 after hackers stole his banking information and made four donations to charities.

"Since we picked it up and I was able to identify it within two hours, we were able to suspend it," Barr said.

Former LSU Coach will sign copies of new book

Former LSU men's basketball coach Dale Brown will be on campus Friday, Nov. 25, to sign his newly-released motivational book, "Getting Over the Four Hurdles of Life."

The signing will take place at the LSU Bookstore in the LSU Student Union from 10 a.m. until noon, just before the football team's game against Arkansas.

Brown, who coached the Tigers from 1972 to 1997, is widely recognized as one of the top motivational speakers in the United States. He is also well known as the recruiter and college coach of former NBA star Shaquille O'Neal.

Brown's book is being billed as "one of the strongest, most inspiring works since Dr. Norman Vincent Peale published 'The Power of Positive Thinking' in 1952."

The book identifies some of the main obstacles, or hurdles, that block the path to success, happiness and fulfillment. It prescribes ways of dealing with and overcoming these obstacles.

Brown illustrates his key points by telling inspiring stories of people who emerged victorious though the deck seemed to be stacked against them. For instance, Albert Einstein, Steven Spielberg, Oprah Winfrey, Shaquille O'Neal, Pete Maravich and J.K.

Gas for Guns set for Nov. 19

Gas for Guns set for Nov. 19

In an effort to reduce the number of unsecured firearms on Baton Rouge streets, Mayor-President Melvin L. “Kip” Holden, District Attorney Hillar Moore, III, Sheriff Sid Gautreaux and Baton Rouge Police Chief Dewayne White recently announced the “Gas for Guns” exchange program will take place on Saturday, November 19 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at two area churches.

Qualifying guns can be exchanged at Living Faith Christian Center, 6375 Winbourne Avenue, and Glen Oaks Baptist Church, 7200 Maplewood Drive.

At each location, officers will receive the firearms without asking questions about the donors’ identities or how they came to be in possession of the guns. The exchange program will be limited to two firearms per person while the gas coupons last.

Donors arriving by car should place their firearms in the trunk, so that the law enforcement officers can unload them at the church. Those arriving by truck or on foot should place their firearms in a sealed or closed container, such as a bag, backpack or box.

After collecting 262 unsecured guns, including a dozen assault-style weapons, through the 2010 exchange program, local officials decided to offer gas certificates again and concentrate on some of the neighborhoods most vulnerable to violent crime.
