Bike Ride tonight at LSU will honor cyclist who died

A Baton Rouge Critical Mass bike ride will be held in honor of Nathaniel Crowson tonight, Friday, Jan. 27 at the LSU Memorial Tower starting at 5:30 p.m.

The group will ride to the 'Ghost Bike' near skate park at 6 p.m. then  they will gather at the gallery at  521 N 19th Street.

Crowson, 30,  was hit and killed while riding his bike on Saturday, Jan. 21 on Perkins Road around 8:45 p.m.  He was pronounced dead at the scene.He was a former employee at WAFB Channel 9.

Joseph Branch, 28, has been arrested on second offense DWI and vehicular homicide charges.

Academic Competition for Middle Schools

From chess games and math problems to spelling and debates, middle schoolers will be going toe to toe in several contest rounds on Saturday, Jan 28 at 8 a.m. at McKinley Middle Academic Magnet School, 1550 Eddie Robinson Senior Drive,  during the district’s fourth annual Academic Competition. About 400 students will be representing middle schools from across the district and surrounding area in rounds focusing on various subjects, including a catch-all Quiz Bowl.  Sites represented will include Broadmoor, Capitol, Glasgow, McKinley, Park Forest, Sherwood, Southeast, Staring, West Feliciana and Westale middle schools.

CAAWS 2012 Mystic Krewe of Mutts Mardi Gras Dog Parade!

Hear Yea Hear Yea! King Yogi, Queen Lillie, Prince Domino and Princess Lily are requesting your presence at the 13th Annual CAAWS Mystic Krewe of Mutts Mardi Gras Dog Parade on Sunday January 29.

This annual event is the largest fund-raiser for the Capital Area Animal Welfare Society (CAAWS) and all profits go directly to support our community spay/neuter fund.  Established in 1979, CAAWS is an all-volunteer organization dedicated to the prevention of animal suffering in the Baton Rouge area. Please help us make a difference and prevent animal suffering.  CAAWS is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. Registration fees and donations are tax-deductible but non-refundable.

Here is a list of the days activities

10:00 am  - 4:00 pm - Bark in the Park

10:00 am - Parade-day registration begins

12:00 pm - Costume contest begins promptly at NOON

1:30 pm - The parade rolls down North Blvd. between Fifth Street and Ninth Street

LSU, LPO partner

The LSU College of Music & Dramatic Arts is set to begin a 30-month collaboration with the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra, or LPO, funded through the an $750,000 award to LPO by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation

            The LPO-LSU partnership will utilize resources from the only full-time professional orchestra in the Gulf South and the flagship public university of Louisiana to expand the market of music performance and create 21st-century access through technology to music and educational content.

            Foundation funding will also create opportunities for musicians, students and faculty to become involved in innovative work and will support student internships in New Orleans and Baton Rouge.

            The first project of the LPO-LSU partnership will be a live internet webcast of “Becoming American: A Musical Journey” on Wednesday, Jan. 25, at 7:30 p.m. from St. Louis Cathedral in New Orleans.

Father Greg Boyle will speak at Power of Hope

Father Greg Boyle, also known as "Father G" to his "homies" who has been an ordained Jesuit priest for 28 years will be the guest speaker at the Power of Hope on Thursday, March 29 at 6:30 p.m. at the Renaissance Baton Rouge Hotel.

His impressive academic credentials include degrees from Gonzaga and Loyola Marymount. In the 1980’s, he taught at a parochial high school in Brazil. Upon returning to the U.S., he became the chaplain at Folsom Prison, in Represa, CA.

Serving as founder and executive director of Homeboy Industries since 1992, Father Boyle released his first book in 2010 titled Tattoos on the Heart. Homeboy Industries employs former gang members in its own social enterprise ventures as part of a prisoner re-entry program. Homeboy Industries’ business ventures include a bakery, a café, a silkscreen and embroidery studio, and a full branded apparel line. In preparing for employment, clients have access to a free, on-site tattoo removal clinic.

Governor reappoints several members to the HIV Commission

Governor Bobby recently announced the re-appointments of several members to the HIV, AIDS, and Hepatitis C Commission.

Leah Cullins, of Baton Rouge, is an assistant professor and family nurse practitioner at Southern University School of Nursing.  Cullins will be re-appointed to serve as a nurse representative from the Louisiana Nursing Association, as required by statute.
